Blackjack Terms

1st Base: The player on the far left of the dealer.

Action: A total amount of money bet in a period of time. Five bets of five dollars in $25 of action.

Anchor or 3rd Base: The player furthest to the right of the dealer.

Basic Strategy: The best playing system based on visible player and dealer cards.

Black Chip: $100

Burn Card: The top card of a deck or the first card in a shoe which is discarded by the dealer. This is done after every shuffle.

Bust: A hand that exceeds 21. A losing hand.

Cage: The cashier where you can exchange cash for chips and vice versa.

Comp: Depending on the amount wagered, a casino will award you “comp”limentary items like food, show tickets, hotels, etc.

Counter: A person who counts cards.

Cut Card: A solid colored plastic card used by players to cut the deck after a shuffle.

Double Down – You may double your bet and take one additional card.

Drop Percentage: The amount of a player’s money that the casino will win based on casino advantage.

Flat Bet: The same bet from hand to hand.

Foreign Chip: A chip from one casino honored at another. Often done in Las Vegas.

Green Chip: $25

Grinder: A player who bets small amounts.

Hard Hand: Any hand where the ace is counted as 1 not 11.

Head-On: Playing alone against the dealer.

High Roller: A player who bets large amounts.

Hit: Request for another card.

Hole Card: A face down card.

House Percentage: The advantage of a casino in any given game.

House: Casino.

Junket: Organized group trips for gamblers to a casino.

Marker: A line of credit from a casino.

Mechanic: A person who can manipulate cards.

Pair: Two cards of the same value.

Pat Hand: A hand with a total of 17 or higher.

Pit Boss: The supervisor of gaming tables, dealers and players in a casino.

Pit: A group of gaming tables.

Point Count: The value of a card count at the end of a hand.

Push: A tie between the player and dealer.

Red Chip: $5

Rich Deck: A deck with a high number of tens and aces.

Running Count: The count from the beginning of a deck updated after each hand.

Settlement: The resolution of a bet. Either the dealer takes your wager or pays out your winnings.

Shill: A casino employee posing as a player at a game in order to attract players.

Shoe: A box that can hold up to 8 decks of cards allowing them to be dealt one card at a time.

Shuffle Up: Early shuffling of the cards to thwart a suspected card counter.

Splitting Pairs – A pair may be split into two separate hands betting the same amount on both and played individually. Aces only get one additional card. An ace and ten is 21 not blackjack.

Soft Hand: Any hand where the ace is counted as 11 not 1.

Stand: Decline additional cards.

Surrender: A rule that allows the player to quit after receiving their first two cards and losing half their bet.

Toke: Tipping the dealer.

True Count: The running count adjusted for the number of cards left in the deck.

Unit: The dollar amount of a single bet – one chip.
