Playing Blackjack
There are a lot of false truths about blackjack. Many of these have led to disaster at the table for a lot of blackjack players. The following should set straight any misconceptions about the game and how to play it.
1. To win at Blackjack you must be lucky. This is not true. Blackjack is one of the few casino games where, in the long run, the player can achieve a mathematical advantage over the house using their own skill. Players who play for the long term are familiar with how to play blackjack and exactly how much profit is at stake depending on the strategy he chooses.
2. To win at blackjack to must be a mathematical genius. After math professor Edward Thorpe published his book Beat the Dealer in 1962, many people got the idea only very intelligent people who were predisposed to mathematics could win at Blackjack. This is completely untrue.
3. To win at blackjack you must have a photographic memory. A photographic memory or anything like it is not needed to win at blackjack. The hardest part is memorizing basic strategy for each hand. If you can remember one number then you’ll have not trouble tracking cards.
4. Dealer’s deal to fast to keep track of cards. Some dealers to deal fast, they can never deal faster then you can play. Until you make you decision to stand, a dealer cannot deal past you. Sometimes dealers will start slowly and gradually increase speed to get you up to their speed of play. You always control the way you want to play your hand. Dealers will never deal to fast to keep track of cards.
5. You cannot win playing with four or six decks of cards. There are too many cards to keep track of. Multiple decks many seem hard to play against, but they are not more complex. Tracking just takes a little longer. The difficulty of tracking cards is the same. You can track the cards with any simple card counting system, just like a single deck of cards.
6. You must have a large bankroll to win large amounts of money at Blackjack. This is not necessarily the case. All you need to two hundred dollars. You can win thousands with this starting bankroll. It will take you longer, because you have to make small bets at first, but you will win at the same rate as someone betting a thousand dollars per hand. The longer you play, the more you’ll win.
7. There is no cheating in Las Vegas casinos. In the bigger casinos, the dealers are better at cheating. Dealers do cheat and cheat people out of thousands of dollars. However, a cheating dealer is not usually sanctioned by the casino.
8. Casinos only cheat high rollers. A dealer can cheat anyone they want to, no matter what they have bet. Dealers that cheat don’t discriminate since it is easier to deal a good hand to themselves than to deal a certain player a bad hand.
9. Bad player’s can ruin a good game. Usually bad players help as much as they hinder at the blackjack table. Players that win never blame other players for their losses. A winning player will often thank the bad player who has helped by playing badly.
10. The player in the third base seat has a bigger effect on whether the dealer will bust or not than any other player. This does seem to be true, since they are the last to draw. However, he really has no more effect on the dealer than any other player. The last position has not real effect. What matters is what cards are drawn by all the players.
11. Players are cheated by casino shills. A shill is a casino staff member who plays at a table with house money to attract players to a table. It is very odd for a shill to cheat a player. They usually have no long term effect on a player’s advantage or disadvantage.
